OVERVIEW

Peking University School of Health HumanitiesSHHis a teaching and research entity in the field of medical and health humanities and social sciences. It carries both western and eastern traditions in the humanities and is deeply influenced by the well-grounded cultural and intellectual heritage from Peking University. By embracing a number of disciplines, it explores the value and meaning of medicine and health. The School commits itself to multi-disciplinary dialogues and inter-disciplinary integration between medical sciences, the humanities and social sciences so as to provide theoretical and empirical support for the reform and development in medical education and health care in China.

The school comprises seven departments and one center: The Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine, The Department of Medical Ethics and Law, The Department of Medical Psychology, The Department of Language and Culture in Medicine, Department of Health Politics/Center for Marxism, The Department of Health Informatics and Management, The Department of Physical Education and Health, and The Center for Aesthetics and Art Education. It also encompasses four university-level research centers: the Center for Research on the History of Medicine, Clinical Psychology Research Center, Research Center on Sexology, and China-US Center on Medical Professionalism.

SHH hosts one five-year Biomedical English undergraduate program, seven Master’s programs: History of Science and Technology, Applied Psychology, Medical Ethics, Medical Sociology, Fundamental Principles of Marxism, Studies in Chinese Modern and Contemporary History, and Ideological and Political Education; and three PhD programs in the History of Science and Technology, Medical Ethics, and Applied Psychology. The school also recruit post-doctoral research fellows. Now there are 254 full time students in the school, including 202 undergraduate students, 32 Master candidates and 20 PhD candidates.

SHH has a strong teaching and research team with cross-disciplinary backgrounds in liberal art education and the medical and humanities. The school comprises of 135 members, including 99 faculty members, 16 professors and researchers, 37 associate professors and researchers, 15 PhD Supervisors, 10 M.A./M.S. Supervisors and one endowed professor: “Peking University Bo Ya Professor”.

“Encouraging Freedom in Mind, Embracing Diversity in Thought”, SHH provides an open and diverse platform for faculty and students. Upon graduation, most undergraduates have either successfully pursued further studies in prestigious universities at home or abroad, or have found jobs in various sectors of the national government, state-owned enterprises, joint-ventures or private enterprises. For graduate students, they mostly work in teaching, research, clinical or administrative jobs in their own fields. All of our graduates have won recognition and acclaim from employers.
